Unusual Times, Unusual Grief

In the wake of what’s happening in the world around us, we understand that grieving the loss of a loved one is likely even more difficult – and certainly more unusual. It’s so hard being separated from those who might normally support us in-person; not having traditional services and rituals that often help us through; and potentially living alone, in complete isolation. Then you add the barrage of news coverage and panic that seems to be happening in many places. Having all these things – and more, layer on top of the pain of losing a loved one can make us feel overwhelmed.

We have created four new videos we hope might provide some words of reassurance and some tips and techniques to help you cope with your grief, especially during these unusual times. Each video is around 5-minutes long and offers a variety of resources you might find helpful. Check out our other resources on this page as well.

Healing from Loss and Grief

Living with the death of a loved one is heartbreaking and difficult. Our grief counseling and support services help guide the way to hope and healing.

Our licensed counselors and social workers and trained volunteers support people of all ages who are grieving a loss. Our hospice bereavement program provides support to grieving family members and friends of those who were cared for by Suncoast Hospice of Hillsborough.

You are not alone. We are here to help you share your feelings, adapt to life’s changes and thrive in the future with peace.

Suncoast Hospice of Hillsborough Grief Counseling

Our individual and family grief counseling is a complimentary service for grieving family and friends of those who were cared for by Suncoast Hospice of Hillsborough. This service extends through the first year after the loss.

Trained, experienced counselors and social workers provide specialized grief counseling to those who are hurting from the death of a loved one.

Suncoast Hospice of Hillsborough & Community Grief Support Groups

Our grief support groups are designed to provide you support after the loss of someone important to you. Grieving is a uniquely personal experience and many people find comfort, hope and strength by coming together with others to remember loved ones.

These groups are open to those who were under the care of Suncoast Hospice of Hillsborough and members of our community who have experienced a loss. The groups are generally six weeks long and are facilitated by trained and experienced counselors. Registration is required.

We also provide educational workshops at various times during the year.

Please note: We recommend that you allow yourself at least three months after the death of your loved one before attending a grief support group. Often times it can be difficult to take in other people’s losses when you are in the early stages of grief. We offer individual grief counseling at any time throughout your grief journey.

Perinatal Loss Support

Our perinatal loss program supports any families who are suffering from a pregnancy loss, stillbirth or death of a baby shortly after birth. Services may begin when a diagnosis is made during pregnancy or delivery. Our trained counselors provide individual or family counseling and support groups. Referrals may be made for our trained perinatal loss doula volunteers who go to hospitals during deliveries to provide advocacy, comfort and support to mothers and families. Call (813) 651-7300 for services.

Community Grief Support
Our individual and family counseling, support groups, workshops and children’s groups and camps are open to anyone who is hurting from the death of a loved one, not just someone in hospice care.

The specialized focus is on unexpected traumatic deaths, illness and workplace crisis intervention. Support groups for coping with specific types of loss are six weeks long and offered at our community service centers and other locations in the community. Workshops for coping with grief during the holidays are offered during the fall and winter seasons. Children’s groups and camps and other specialized presentations are held periodically.

Visit our calendar for a listing and registration. Call (727) 523-3451 for counseling fees and scheduling. There may also be fees for special presentations.

Community Memorial Services
Our community memorial services bring together our staff and community members to remember friends and loved ones who have died. Our services are non-denominational, open to everyone and held several times a year in various locations in the community. Visit our calendar for a listing.
