“Happiness is not a goal; it is a by-product”

When I was a teenager, I used to go fishing off the coast of the island of Guam in a boat with my father.  I remember seeing the horizon as we set out and thinking that it didn’t look all that far away.  Yet, the further out we went, the further it receded into the distance.

Happiness can be a little like this.  When we pursue happiness in our lives we think we can see it in a shiny new car or money in the bank.  But these things only provide momentary pleasures, not the lasting sense of happiness that we long for.

When we begin to seek a higher goal, however, working for the welfare of our family and our community and striving to be an instrument of peace for others; joy comes to us of its own accord.   May we live lives which fill our hearts with joy!

Have a good week, everyone!
