Tara Brach, a clinical psychologist and meditation teacher, tells the story of a client whose mother was in the dying process. While her daughter sat quietly at her bedside, her mother opened her eyes and said to her in a clear voice “All my life I thought something was wrong with me.” After this, she closed her eyes and died shortly after.
So many of us experience the kind of spiritual and emotional suffering that comes with the nagging sense that “I am not okay. I’m deficient. I’m falling short in some way.” These feelings of inadequacy or self-recrimination can negatively affect not only self-worth but our relationships and our whole quality of life.
May we find it in our hearts to extend the same kindness, compassion and forgiveness to ourselves that we do to others. Have a great week, everyone!
