A spiritual sage once said, “Don’t do what you want.  Then, do whatever you like.”  This maxim, like many spiritual truths, is paradoxical.  It appears at first glance to be contradictory.  But this quizzical phrase illuminates a very important principle.  Our freedom lies not in chasing our every heart’s desire or giving in to the clamoring of our senses at every turn.

We are free when we are able to choose the highest good for ourselves and for others; even when that choice requires the discipline and discrimination to decline the pleasure of the moment in favor of what is of lasting value.

May we be blessed with the freedom to think, speak, and act directed not by momentary whims but by our vision of the highest good.

Have a great week, everyone!
