When I was in middle school (we called it Junior High back then) the big hang out on Friday night was the roller skating rink. I remember watching people young and old who were learning how to skate and quickly noticed there were two different types.
One type hugged the wall the whole time. They never fell once, but at the end of the night, they weren’t much better than when they started.
The other type struck right out in to the center of the rink. They were just as unsteady, and some of them fell down . . . a lot. But they just laughed, got back up and tried again. At the end of the night, these folks looked a lot more at home on four wheels than when the evening began. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, I was looking at an important life lesson. A wise person once said,
Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage
How many times have we played it safe and missed out on a chance to open ourselves up to new and exciting adventures? When life puts an opportunity in our path to respond with courage, may we be willing to sacrifice the comfort and safety of the wall for the expansive thrill of feeling the wind in our face.
Have a great week, everyone!
