Not too long ago, I had to make a run to CVS in the evening. The store was pretty empty, so when I came up to make my purchase, I asked the cashier how he was doing. He said, “All right, I guess. Tryin’ to make it.” He went on to explain that he had been diagnosed with a debilitating illness but that he had to keep working because it was his and his wife’s only source of income.
On the drive home, I couldn’t help but reflect that so often we don’t realize what people are going through. The private struggles and the personal pain that they bear. It brought to mind a quote from one of the philosophers:
“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle.”
~ Philo of Alexandria
Whether it is someone anxiously awaiting the results of their HIV test, or the nice lady being dropped off for the day at our PACE Center, or the distinguished gentleman trying to bear with dignity his terminal diagnosis, or even a co-worker who just doesn’t seem to be him/herself – may we treat each one with kindness knowing that we too will need that same kindness extended to us along our journey.
Have a great week everyone.
