When it comes right down to it, many of our conflicts are about a lack of respect as much or more as the facts or issues at hand.  Think about it this way – when we are in a conflict with someone, what would it look like if our inner thoughts magically printed out on a big screen above our heads?  We may be saying something like, “I hear what you are saying.” But our body language points to the big screen which reads,  “That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard!  Why can’t you see that I am right!!??”

When we really show respect to someone, we listen carefully and without interruption, taking into serious consideration the insights they are offering.  In the Talmud (Rabbinic teachings which explain and interpret Hebrew scriptures) there is a great saying.

Who is wise?  One who learns from all.

May we have the humility and grace to recognize that we have much to learn.  Especially from those with whom we are in conflict.

Have a great week, everyone!
