Director of Spiritual Care Jim Andrews

I was with a group the other night when it was pointed out that the “pursuit of happiness” is a constitutional right for us.  So often, happiness is exactly what we are aiming for in our lives.  We work diligently to carefully construct our lives in such a way to maximize our happiness and minimize or even eliminate our suffering.  When suffering enters our lives, as it always does, we see it as an unwelcome visitor whom we try to rush out the door as soon as possible and with the least amount of disruption.  Ironically, it is our rejection of suffering which prolongs and deepens it.  The 11th century Anamcara tradition offers us a different approach:

May you have the commitment to know what has hurt you,

to allow it to come closer to you, and in the end

to become one with you.

This is a difficult and sometimes frightening path.  But when we create space within ourselves to fully experience and integrate our seasons of suffering, we are able to move through the pain and emerge stronger and wiser for the journey.

Wishing for all those who are in the midst of painful times courage and grace and strength for your journey.

Have a great week, everyone!
