A documentary film was created the purpose of which was to explore what made people happy. The title of the film was, as you might expect, “Happy.” The findings in the film go against many of the messages we hear in popular culture which clamor incessantly that happiness is derived from having a lot of money and possessions, good looks, power, prestige, and status. The film features beautiful vignettes of people in different parts of the world from all walks of life. So, what do you think they discovered were the keys to happiness?
Contrary to popular belief, money only increases our happiness up to the point where our basic needs are met. If you don’t have food, clothes, shelter, or safety then money can help. After that, it doesn’t do much for our lasting happiness. A few of the things that really provide that long-term sense of contentment and satisfaction and joy are:
- Loving and supportive family
- Sense of belonging and community
- Opportunities to contribute to the well-being of others
It reminds me of a very old and very wise woman I met at one of our care centers. She was bedbound and declining fairly rapidly after being an active and contributing member of her community for many years. One day, she looked at me and said, “Jim, I’m ready to go now.” When I asked her what helped her to feel that sense of readiness, she said, “Because this body can no longer be used in the service of others.”
Wishing for all of us – loving family, welcoming community, and opportunities for meaningful involvement.
Have a great week!
Jim
P.S. The documentary is free to watch on Netflix!
